Online store integrations in Estonia: payments, parcel lockers and accounting

Estonian shoppers expect to pay through their bank and pick up from a parcel locker. Here is the integration stack a local online store needs, and how to extend it to Latvia and Lithuania.

An online store that works well in Germany or the UK can still struggle in Estonia, because Estonian shoppers have their own habits. They expect to pay through their own bank, pick up parcels from a locker and get an invoice that works with their accounting. Here is the integration stack a local store needs.

Payments

Estonian customers commonly pay by bank link, a payment initiated directly from their online bank, as well as by card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Rather than integrating each bank separately, most stores use a payment provider that bundles them. Providers used in Estonia include:

  • Montonio, which offers bank payments, cards and other methods across the Baltics
  • Maksekeskus, an Estonian payment gateway with bank links and cards
  • Stripe, for card payments and international customers
  • Paysera, common in Lithuania

What matters most: all major local banks are supported (in Estonia that typically means Swedbank, SEB, LHV, Luminor and Coop Pank), checkout works on mobile, and refunds can be issued from your store admin.

Delivery

Parcel lockers (pakiautomaadid) are the default delivery method for many Estonian shoppers. The main carriers are:

  • Omniva, Estonia's postal company, with lockers across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
  • DPD, with pickup lockers and points across the Baltics
  • SmartPosti, with a large locker network in Estonia
  • LP Express, common in Lithuania

A good integration lets customers pick their locker on a map at checkout, generates shipping labels automatically and sends tracking links.

Accounting and invoicing

Every order should flow into your accounting without retyping. Common accounting tools in Estonia include Merit Aktiva, SmartAccounts and Directo, and most have APIs. Estonia has also been moving steadily toward structured e-invoices, so make sure your B2B invoicing can produce them.

Taxes and prices

  • Show prices including VAT for consumers
  • Check the current Estonian VAT rate and the rates in each Baltic country you sell to, as they differ and have changed recently
  • Above the EU-wide distance sales threshold, use the OSS scheme to charge VAT of the customer's country

Going pan-Baltic

Expanding from Estonia to Latvia and Lithuania is often the logical next step. With the right setup, one store can serve all three countries with:

  • Separate language versions (see our multilingual website guide)
  • Country-specific prices, VAT and shipping
  • Local payment methods and carriers per country
  • One admin and one stock system
